Done!

Ok I am not sure whether to be thrilled or what...I crackled the painting and stained it.
As you can see the crackle is not consistent which gives it interest and charm but it irks my perfectionist side no end!

I used DecoArt One Step Crackle which works great for small projects but try to get it to cover a 16" x 20" canvas in an even coat ...well it "ain't" going to happen. So it came out a little uneven and that got my goat.
Oh well I am hoping that maybe the finishing sealer may even out the surface a bit otherwise it will be what I refer to as a rustic finish.....:)
Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the question to "to crackle or not to crackle" it was fun to read the comments and overall I think crackling and staining was the way to go!

  1. Oh Tina, I really love it!!! I know what you mean about the 'perfectionist side' of you getting to you, but no one else will notice--I really think it turned out beautifully!!!

  2. Well, it's not covering the entire piece, but personally I like that it's hit and miss. Seems to make it a bit more antique looking.
Either way, the painting is just beautifully done and you should be so proud. I'm proud to know you!

  3. Very nice! Reminds me of an 1800's folk art painting.

  5. I was thinking that random crackles would give a more realistic aged look to your beautiful painting! As old paintings I've seen don't have uniform crackles. I love it.

  6. It turned out rather well, Tina! It does have the "Old" look. Are you selling or hanging or gifting?

  7. Hi Tina. This is one that you will want to put away for a few days and then give it another look. I know how it is when things don's come out as the mind's eye sees it. You were expecting one thing and got something else. It doesn't mean it is not good, just not what you expected.
Can you give it another coat in the areas you are not happy with? I do not know how that works.

  10. I like the crackle. I wonder, can you crackle it twice? I think that would age it even more and add interesting little layers of shading in the cloth.

  12. I like it! I think it turned out fabulous and I'm glad you did it.
I'm having trouble getting to all my favourite blogs these days too but tomorrow is looking pretty good right now. We just got another 6 inches of snow today and more to come tomorrow - snowbanks in some places are approaching 9 to 10 feet! Looks like we'll be having a late spring this year I think. Stay warm!
